A RETROSPECTIVE OF SPICE ROUTE
TONS MEMORIES OF TROVE
Spices are often seen merely as kitchen ingredients, familiar to tradition, to the elderly, or as flavor enhancers. Yet, the story of Indonesian spices once crossed oceans, became more valuable than gold, and served as the lifeblood of global civilization, from ancient religious rituals and Egyptian mummification to sparking colonial voyages that reshaped world history. The greatest challenge is how to reframe this extraordinary heritage so it feels relevant, alive, and emotionally close to today’s generation.
Through The Spice Route Exhibition, we designed an experience not just to be seen, but also to be felt, inhaled, and remembered. From the Borobudur ship installation—equipped with hydraulic systems and a giant curved LED screen that “sails” visitors to Calcutta—to interactive scented maps that bring the fragrance of history to life. Weekend music concerts add youthful energy, celebrating the spirit of the Nusantara as the maritime hub of the world. This is a tribute to the Spice Route legacy: a multisensory journey bridging past and future, reminding us that spices hold stories far deeper than the kitchen.
